Project discriptionGround in Flux is an experimental visual communication project inspired by the volcanic landscapes of Hawaiʻi Island. It explores the evolving relationships between volcanic activity, geological transformations, and the natural environment.

At the heart of the project is Pele, an original experimental display typeface inspired by the movement, branching, and solidification of lava. Extending beyond typography into information design, poster series, and conceptual environmental graphics, the project draws on authentic geological data and historical records. Through image reconstruction, color experimentation, and typographic expression, it transforms natural phenomena and scientific information into an expressive visual language.

Rather than simply depicting the physical forms of volcanoes, Ground in Flux asks: Can the same natural forces that shape the land also shape the language of visual communication?

01. Typeface Design — Pele

Pele is an original experimental display typeface featuring 26 uppercase letters. Inspired by the movement, branching, and solidification of lava, its irregular contours, extended strokes, and fluid curves explore the relationship between natural forms and letterform structures. While maintaining legibility, the typeface challenges conventional geometric approaches to letterform design.

02. Editorial Design — Field Guide

An experimental publication exploring the volcanic landscapes and trails of Hawaiʻi Island, combining geological research, trail information, and typography. Drawing on archival approaches to information design, the publication integrates maps, photography, diagrams, and varied typographic scales to create a reading experience that moves between a practical field guide and a visual study.

03. Poster Series — Volcanic Records

A series of three experimental informational posters examining the volcanic histories of Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualālai. Blue, red, and green represent water, volcanic eruptions, and vegetation, respectively. Drawing from authentic geological imagery and historical data, the series uses image layering, textural treatments, and experimental typography to reinterpret scientific information through visual composition.

04. Environmental Graphics — Volcanic Wayfinding

A conceptual environmental wayfinding system developed for volcanic trails, including entrance markers, directional signs, geological interpretation panels, and trail markers. Using natural basalt as the primary material, the system incorporates Pele typography for location names and prominent signage, alongside a restrained information hierarchy. The project explores how experimental typography interacts with materiality, scale, and readability in natural environments.
